Turku has long history, and it was biggest city and capital of Finland. Over the last two centuries Turku lost these two titles to Helsinki. Now it is the oldest city in Finland and country’s first capital. Originally “Finland” means only area around Turku.
Turku has founded in late 13th century, then name was t¨³rg¨³ (Old East Slavic word which means “market place” ). The Cathedral of Turku, Turku Castle and the Dominican monastery were consecrated in 1300. Turku’s first university was founded in 1640, even the number of citizen wasn't very large. Turku was also meeting place of Finland at 1676.
In 1827 was big fire and Turku was dramatically destroyed. Turku needed a new town plan, and it was drawn up by C. L. Engel the following year.
About 200.000 people visit in Turku Castle every year and schools do excursions to there.
